Damn, I sound like Ghostface now…no disrespect to Tony Starks but he comes with some random shit sometimes. It’s actually one of the things I like about him. It makes you want to listen again and again. I still catch new stuff in his Cuban Linx verses.
As I was so humorously informed at the Cleveland Webloggers Meetup, chasing the dragon was a reference to smoking heroin. Not surprising considering I lifted it from a Steely Dan song, (”Time Out of Mind” if you are wondering). In light of this development, I chose a new name…something that’s a little more me.
Enter, a subset of derek.
subset (noun): a set each of whose elements is an element of an inclusive set.
Source: Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary.
So, a subset of derek is merely part of a whole. I am pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, as many of you know. Subsets are merely parts of a set. Subsets are also crucial to proving set equality. If two sets are subsets of each other (meaning that there is no item that can be found in A that cannot be found in B and vice versa, given that A and B are sets, of course) then they are equal. This reminds me of a problem that I need to be working on…
Later all…
I was born in Cleveland 30 years ago. I lived there until I went away to Allegheny College. In 1998, I moved to Akron (the first time). Moving to Akron was somewhat like moving away. Dad and I packed my stuff into his Camry (which almost got totaled by Dad almost hitting a deer on the way to get me in PA one day…but that’s another story) and I made my way down I-77 to Gallucci Hall at the University of Akron.
That’s when it started. Some of my best experiences were in Akron…some of my worst too. I have made lifelong friends here, a couple of which are from Cleveland. My son was born here and resides here.
So, which am I?
Think about how hip-hop would sound with no sampling…
I guess I am biased because I am a huge fan of sampling. There’s nothing like embodying the original like when DJ Premier scratches up a sample ’step-step-up’ (as in “Step in the Arena” which is in the headphones now) to strengthen the song or twisting the meaning of the song by totally pulling a sample out of left field like hmm…the song that inspired the name of this blog…
Just something to think about…peace!
