This shout out goes to Barry Bonds. 700 home runs (he has 701 right now) is a herculean feat. Enough of the words from the “Barry’s on ‘roids” haters and the “we won’t pitch to him” wimps…This man deserves some respect. 13 years of 30 + HR…this isn’t ‘roids, this is skill. This is like telling an excellent carpenter that the somehow cheated to get to the top in his craft when his dad and his godfather were both excellent carpenters. Barry grew up with baseball in his blood. I am sure he knows the game better than (conservative estimate) 99% of the players in MLB right now. He has played this game all of his life and has played the pro game a long time. He is probably the best all-around hitter this game has seen.

Give him his due. But he doesn’t care if you don’t, because he has earned his due. And he knows it. That’s why y’all hate him and that’s why I respect him. He’s like Dr. Benton on ER. He busted his butt to get to the top so you can’t take that away because he earned it.

I am finally doing it.

I borrowed Diane Goodman’s The Genius of Hunger from the library…again. I might actually get to read it this time. It is a very interesting look into the lives of several women. Every story involves women, food and Miami. More about it later.

Some of you may be asking, why am I reading this. Well, a couple of reasons. I have become a wanna be cultural sociologist with particular interest in popular culture and gender and race issues. (Thanks C!) I think that these issues are very important and a little exploration in these areas could lead to lots of mutual understanding. So, reading books that get into these issues are good reading. Also, I was one of Dr. Goodman’s students at Allegheny College. Though many of the professors there that I had believed in my abilities, she was probably one of the more candid and explicit about it. When I felt that I didn’t belong there, she, being a native Clevelander herself said “Bullshit.” She saw my potential…damn shame it’s taking me until now to really grasp it. Thanks, Dr. Goodman and all of the other peeps that believed in me (too many to name). I will prove you right yet! I, at least, owe it to her to read her work. And, I am glad I am.

Everyone’s talking about how shameful USA Basketball is/was when I was alerted to one thing by Mike Lupica. USA Baseball didn’t even QUALIFY for the olympics. They have pros. No one is giving them grief. They didn’t make it to Athens. At least men’s basketball went and got a bronze.

So if you want to talk junk about men’s basketball, talk about the baseball team WORSE.

It’s time for football.

The Colts choked once again (sorry Karen) and the Titans moshed the Dolphins…they are missing Ricky now, I bet. I just hope that Ricky isn’t in Jamaica. Ivan is coming…and my heart goes out to the people in the path of Ivan and in the paths of Charley and Frances.

I just hope that the powers that be don’t use this as an excuse to botch the elections.

With that said…time for the Browns/Ravens. I hope Deion has a great game…but I hope the Browns win.
